Monks in Exile
On March 31, 1959, his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama began a permanent exile in India, settling at Dharamsala. Since then Tibetan monks have lived away from their homelands. This documentary by Masses Collective, directed by Matt Dempsey, explores what it means to be a young monk – to be moulded by tradition and culture and to be denied your home. These new monks have begun to carve out their own idenitites, forming a hybrid of traditional and modern practices.
